Excuse me while I humble brag, but I have the coolest internship this semester.
I intern on the marketing team at Visit Wales, which is a division of VisitBritain, which is the official tourist board for the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland). I work with a team both domestically and internationally to promote taking trips to the UK, specifically to Wales.
To be honest, I didn’t know much about Wales before starting this internship. Rest assured though, I’ve already learned so much about this very proud country, and if it wasn’t already somewhere on the ever-growing bucket list, it most certainly is now.
This job is the coolest because I get to learn about a totally different culture, and I work with a whole bunch of awesome, worldly people who travel for a living. Essentially all I’ve ever wanted to do with the rest of my life…
Anyway, though I’m just an intern, I somehow managed to score an invite to the launch of the next phase of the Britain Is Great ad campaign. The campaign has been running worldwide since 2013, and this phase of the campaign highlights the countryside. Breathtaking sights from all over Wales are going to be heavily featured in this phase of the campaign (See graphic below, top left-hand corner, apologies for the small image size!).
You guys. I’m not cool enough to go to launch parties. BUT I GOT TO GO TO A LAUNCH PARTY.
The launch, appropriately deemed The Countryside Collection, was held on Thursday night at a hip studio space in TriBeCa. It started with a press preview, and then the room quickly filled with people from all areas of the industry.
Mid-way through the evening, amongst beautiful pictures of the British countryside and a stage surrounded by shrubbery, Michael Kay and Katherine Jenkins took to the stage to crack jokes, sing at mind-blowing octaves and share their love of the country they call home. Their Welsh pride was very cool to see firsthand!
Traditional Welsh rarebit (open-faced bread with cheese sauce) was prepared by the only Welsh pub in New York City, and served to all guests with New York style toppings. There were also passed snacks, including a Fish and Chips bite and a literally melt-in-your-mouth mini sticky toffee pudding (which I would not have found without my manager’s sharp eye). I also managed to snag multiples of that delectable itty-bitty banana cream pie (it has a proper British name but I regret to inform you that I have no idea what it is).
For a first industry event, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Iechyd da (cheers in Welsh!) to (hopefully) the first of many opportunities to join the leagues of the world’s most fabulous travelers!
